About the Event
For nearly 60 years, the Voting Rights Act has stood as one of the most significant victories in the fight for racial justice and equal access to the ballot box. But today, the protections it once guaranteed are being weakened, reshaped, or erased altogether. This Stand Against Injustice program will trace the evolution of voting rights in the United States — from the nation’s founding and the exclusion of marginalized communities, through the passage of the 1965 VRA, to the modern-day challenges of voter suppression. Our panelists include Dr. Sekou Franklin, Exec. Director of the John Lewis Center for Social Justice at Fisk University, John Cusick with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and Rachael Spriggs, Director of Powerbuilding for The Equity Alliance.
